Technical Info:
PSP Revolution was developed using the C language, all code is original and not taken from Stepmania
or Dance Dance Revolution. The game started out as a challenge to ourselves and a learning experience
and it was because of the overwhelming responce from users that pushed us to getting this far. Programming
this game for the PSP was not easy. unlike Stepmania and othe dance sims who could utilize the processing power
of a PC, the PSP had many hardware restrictions durring the development process.
Originally PSP Revolution v0.1 was coded to run at 222mhz and was using 16bit graphics with no transparency
capabilities and we were only processing *.mp3 audio formats. Now we have optimized the source code to boost the PSP processor to run at 333mhz and run 32bit
transparent graphics as well as we now stream in *.mp3, *.ogg and *.wav formats.
One of my favorite obsticles in development was the size of the game. We learned alot of techniques to maximize
efficiencey and graphically ways to keep the game visually appealing without taking up too much file space. The
PSP base model is packaged with a 32MB memory stick so we had to develop the game to be small enough to fit on the
32MB stick and still have enough room for a handful of songs. Typically the average song is between 1.5MB to 4MB in
size so with a 32MB memory stick a person should be able to hold close to 10 songs. I personally have a 4GB memory stick
and currently hold about 1,500 songs.
The game was developed to take the fun of DDR and Stepmania and make it mobile. In the beginning there were alot of
sceptics who questioned why you woul make DDR for a system that could not support a dance pad. But it wasnt about
being able to dance to the music, it was about quick fun pick up and put down arcade style fun. This is by far my
favorite game for the PSP, it can be as easy or hard as you want it and the game has an unlimited amount of content.
